In a previous post, we learned about centerless grinding and maintaining the importance of consistent centerline.
This time, we'll explore how to produce top-notch bearings through a fast and efficient process.

Tapered roller large end face grinding

The tapered rollers are guided by sliding contact between the tapered roller large end face and the inner ring large rib face within a tapered roller bearing.

Therefore, the large end face of the tapered rollers must achieve a very fine surface finish and exact geometry.

The undulation of the large end face determines the rotational stability of the tapered roller bearing, and the smaller the large end face runout, the greater the improvement in the rotational smoothness.


Grinding quality of tapered roller large end face

The grinding quality of the tapered roller large end face is represented by the large end face radius dimensional accuracy, large end face surface roughness and large end face runout.

To improve running efficiency (enhancement in fuel economy) by lowering the torque of tapered roller bearings and reduce vibration and noise through stable and smooth operation, the quality of the tapered roller large end face has been gradually enhanced.

Until the 1990s, the tapered roller large end face grinding process consisted of two processes, rough grinding and finish grinding.

However, with the emergence and expansion of dedicated tapered roller large end face grinding machines with powerful performance and the optimization of machining conditions through the hard work of tapered roller manufacturers, a single process has been successfully realized.

As mentioned earlier, the tapered roller large end face grinding process is also a centerless grinding process.


Considering that ensuring the rotational stability of the workpiece during processing is the best way to obtain excellent large end face quality and strict quality distribution, it is believed that groundbreaking improvements in forging quality, continuous reduction of grinding allowance, and securing the preceding quality of the reference surface (raceway) are the ways to secure the required quality through one-pass large end face grinding.
